About the Role
The Mississippi Museum of Art (MMA) and Millsaps College invite applications for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in museum practice. This joint position provides an opportunity to teach, develop exhibitions, and promote community-engaged learning. The Fellow will work collaboratively with academic and museum teams, focusing on integrating art collections into interdisciplinary teaching and research.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching and Mentoring
- Teach one class per semester at Millsaps College in art history or museum practice (e.g., exhibition design, collections management).
- Train and mentor Millsaps College interns for museum roles at MMA and local community sites.
Community Engagement
- Develop community-focused learning opportunities.
- Organize biannual higher education learning institutes for Mississippi faculty.
Curatorial and Research Initiatives
- Collaborate on scholarly projects with the MMA curatorial and education departments.
- Create a teaching gallery connected to college curricula to make MMA’s collection more accessible.
Program Development
- Assist in funding proposals and strategic planning for MMA’s Academic Affairs Department.
Candidate Requirements
Education:
- Ph.D. in Art History, Museum Studies, or a related field (completed by start date).
Experience:
- Minimum two years of professional experience in a museum or gallery, including curatorial work.
- Evidence of effective teaching (sample syllabi and evaluations preferred).
Skills:
- Strong organizational, teaching, and writing skills.
- Knowledge of art handling, cataloging systems, and collection storage.
- Proficiency in digital tools and willingness to teach online if necessary.
