The University Manchester invites applications for a fixed term Postdoctoral Research Associate tenable for 30 months .
The PDRA will support AHRC project Understanding Displacement Aesthetics and Making Change in the Art Gallery with Refugees, Migrants and Host Communities led by Professor Ana Carden-Coyne. You will have completed a PhD in the Arts or Humanities that demonstrates an area of research expertise pertinent to this project.
The project analyses the impact of artistic responses to forced displacement and refugeedom, focusing on three areas: history, contemporary art, and museum practice. It connects academics, artists and curators working in countries affected by displacement, to investigate the historical and contemporary significance of the visual arts for communities of refugee heritage. The project identifies the contours and consequences of ‘displacement aesthetics’, connecting cultural and art history, and museum studies, with refugee and humanitarian studies It uncovers the limited understanding of displacement as an aesthetic culture arising from historical foundations and visual records. It addresses the challenges faced by artists and curators from refugee/migrant backgrounds, and seeks to make curatorial and infrastructural changes in art institutions.
