Overview
The Center for the Art and Architectural History of Port Cities “La Capraia” invites PhD candidates in the early stages of dissertation research to apply for the 2025–2026 Predoctoral Research Residencies. This program focuses on interdisciplinary research in art and architectural history, archaeology, music history, collecting, digital humanities, and related fields, emphasizing the cultural histories of Naples and southern Italy as centers of exchange, encounter, and transformation.
Residency Benefits
- Accommodation: Private bedroom, study, and bath, along with communal living and study spaces at La Capraia.
- Stipend: €7,000 to support living expenses.
- Access to Research Resources: Assistance with access to collections, sites, archives, and libraries in Naples and southern Italy.
- Scholarly Engagement: Opportunities to present research in seminars, gallery talks, or site visits, and contribute an essay to the Center’s annual research report.
Eligibility
- Open to doctoral students of any nationality in the early stages of dissertation research.
- Projects must utilize local research materials such as artworks, archives, libraries, and cultural sites in and around Naples.
Application Requirements
Applicants should prepare the following materials:
- Letter of Interest
- Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Research Proposal (1,000–1,500 words) outlining research questions, methods, scholarly contributions, and the local resources to be used.
- Letters of Recommendation: Three letters sent directly by recommenders.
All documents, including recommendation letters, must be submitted in English by 31 January 2025.
Submission Process
- Combine the letter of interest, CV, and research proposal into a single PDF file titled with your last name.
- Send the PDF to Dott.ssa Francesca Santamaria at francesca.santamaria@utdallas.edu.
- Recommenders should email their letters of support to the same address.
Additional Information
Residents are responsible for obtaining visas, health insurance, and arranging travel to and from Naples. Finalists will be invited for Zoom interviews with representatives from the O’Donnell Institute and Capodimonte.
