The Department of History of Art and Architecture at Tufts University aims to create a new and innovative concentration in Curatorial Studies within its Museum Studies graduate program, in affiliation with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (SMFA) at Tufts, Tufts University Art Galleries, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA). We invite applications to fill a full‐time faculty position at the rank of Professor of the Practice, starting as early as September 2021, to design, administer and teach in the new concentration. In response to an evolving museum environment, we seek a practicing curator with teaching and administrative experience, and an active interest in theories of curating, racial justice, and forward-looking global practice. The position comes with the opportunity to engage with the Department of Studies in Race, Colonialism and Diaspora (through cross-listing of courses, participation in meetings and collaborating on events). Year one of employment will involve designing a new cluster of courses in curatorial studies, networking with colleagues and staff across the Tufts campus, MFA, Tufts University Art Galleries, SMFA, and museums and galleries in the greater-Boston area. Beyond the initial design phase, normal duties will include teaching graduate and undergraduate students, administering and advising graduate students in the Museum Studies track in Art History, and ongoing liaising with local stakeholders listed above (the normal course load at this rank is four courses a year but teaching release will be granted for administrative work).
Qualifications
Ph.D. or advanced degree with a visual focus and significant curatorial experience with ongoing curatorial practice; ability to engage successfully with diverse students and communities; leadership and administrative experience; experience working with historical (non-contemporary) collections; museum-related scholarship. Teaching experience (broadly defined) is preferred.
