
Program Associate, Museum Collections
Located in the heart of Washington, D.C., the George Washington University Museum and The Textile Museum celebrates the creative achievements of local and global cultures from antiquity through today. The museum unites The Textile Museum, established in 1925, and the Albert H. Small Center for National Capital Area Studies to engage the university and the wider community through collections, scholarship, exhibitions, and educational programs.
The Program Associate supports the implementation of the museum’s educational offerings by managing and implementing a portfolio of program series, special events, and activities, including those in the museum’s learning center. This may include providing help gathering data on existing programs and participating in the planning of future schedules. Support also includes working with students, faculty and volunteers, as needed, and contributing to the museum’s commitment to engaging visitors in a fulfilling cultural experience.
The purpose of this position is to provide coordination and program management on behalf of an academic program or initiative. This role will serve as a point of contact for the program, will answer program questions from faculty, staff, and students, and will provide functional support for the program administration. Functional support could include answering most inquiries, enrollment guidance, managing web presence and some marketing efforts, drafting program materials, planning and executing events, tracking spending and processing payments, preparing and analyzing reports, and similar duties. Often these positions make recommendations to policy and procedure. Often these roles are tasked with outreach to other GW stakeholders in order to assist in maintaining standard operational efficiencies.
Typical duties often are administrative in nature including tasks that are routine, and under general or limited supervision of more senior personnel within the department, or program. Reporting to the Director of GW Textiles and Museums, the Program Associate will:
* Manages the Textile Learning Center to include planning, staging and oversight of consultants and board of trustees . Plans, develops and implements updates to Activity Gallery.
* Develops, coordinates, implements, and evaluates exhibition and/or collection-based educational programming: seminars/symposia, lectures, workshops, weekly Rug & Textile Appreciation Mornings, family programs and other special events, such as the annual Rug Convention, Textile Celebrations Day, and Winter Family festival.
* Assist the Curator of Education in tracking and evaluating existing programs and developing the calendar for future programs. Support the docent and volunteer programs, as required, including organization and logistics, scheduling, training, tracking participation, and communicating with docents and volunteers. Promote and schedule group tours, including developing promotional materials and communications to generate interest.
* Communicate the vision for museum education to build the museum’s reputation and attract potential participants and partners. Liaise with GW student groups to encourage undergraduate and graduate participation in museum activities. Support student learning.
* Works with Director of Education to provide educational support for exhibitions through audience research/evaluation, hands-on components, written materials, etc. Collaborates with other area groups to develop special interest programs to broaden program audiences. Recruits, trains, and manages Program Volunteers.
* Support the visitor experience, including orientation, gallery experience, tours, special programs, and hands-on activities. Fill-in receptionist duties, if necessary. Track attendance and participation in activities for monthly, quarterly and annual reporting.
* Attends weekly docent meetings. Schedules school programs and tours. Trains docents as needed. Works with faculty staff and students to promote the education mission of GWU.
* Participates in Public Affairs Task Force and Research, Publications, Library and Education Task Force. Serves on other staff committees and/or task forces as appointed. Performs other duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning tasks that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

communication skills, both written and oral - Proficiency in computer applications, including collections
management database software, Microsoft applications;
Google applications; video editing and video conferencing
(Zoom); Working knowledge of standard registration, preventive
conservation and inventory practices;
Full-Time/Part-Time: Full-Time
Hours Per Week: 40
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:30-5:30, some nights and weekends
