Job Description and Person Specification
Purpose of the Job
Working closely with Bag Factory artists, staff, and the community, the Programmes Manager is responsible for overseeing creative programming, fundraising, and supporting the organization’s sustainable future vision.
Programme Development
- Develop and bring to life the current year’s program with attention to detail and ambition.
- Collaborate with the Director to create inspiring visual art programs for the current and upcoming years.
- Identify and apply for program funding to support the Bag Factory’s goals.
- Assist the Director in researching funding sources, developing fundraising strategies, and organizing fundraising events.
Programmes Management
- Ensure timely and budget-compliant delivery of all activities.
- Accurately manage and report on program funding (narrative and financial).
- Perform duties with cost-effective and efficient management in mind.
- Prepare progress reports on program implementation for the Board and funders.
- Monitor the application process, artist selection, and participation in various programs.
- Provide administrative support to international visiting artists.
- Coordinate operations and technical production of exhibitions.
General
- Oversee day-to-day Bag Factory operations, including communication with artists, contractors, and visitors.
- Serve as “Acting Director” when necessary.
- Maintain presentable and welcoming front-of-house areas.
- Implement the Bag Factory’s equal opportunities policies, financial procedures, and health and safety policies.
- Contribute to a collaborative working environment, including team discussions.
- Support the operational team with graphic design for communication content.
- Additional responsibilities as needed.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications and Skills
- BA Hons/MA degree in a contemporary art-related field.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in arts and cultural organizations.
- Strong project planning, time management, and organizational skills.
- Curatorial experience, research, writing, and editing skills.
- Experience in exhibition conceptualization, implementation, and management.
- Fundraising and proposal writing experience.
- Proficiency in MS Packages, Excel, and Design programs.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proactive, detail-oriented, and creative thinker.
- Professional, good interpersonal skills, and reliable.
- Ability to work well with a wide range of people.
- Proactive, entrepreneurial, and hands-on.
Desirable Qualifications and Skills
- Experience in managing staff/teams.
- Knowledge of the local and national contemporary visual art landscape.
- Interest in contemporary visual art and curatorial practices.
- Keen eye and attention to detail.
Terms and Conditions
- 12 Months contract starting early October 2023.
- Remuneration: R 20,000.00 per month (cost to company).
- Full-time commitment required (5 days a week, Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm).
- Probation period: 3 months.
