Philadelphia Museum of Art
In this two-year position, the Project Assistant Curator will work under the Contemporary Art Department on a special collaboration between the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Penn Medicine. In this role, the Project Assistant Curator will work closely with and under the supervision of the curatorial staff of the Department to shape and implement a unique art program for Penn Medicine’s new Pavilion designed by Norman Foster + Partners. Recently completed, the building of 1.5 million square feet serves the Philadelphia community and beyond with state-of-the-art critical care facilities and advanced technologies. The Philadelphia Museum of Art is working in partnership with Penn Medicine to ensure that art will play a major role in the experience of its patients, their families, and hospital medical and administrative staff. This program will complement commissions by Maya Lin and Odili Donald Odita already in place, and it will occupy ten floors of the expansive hospital building.
The Project Assistant Curator will work with the Department curators to identify artists and artworks, as well as commission works for specific spaces within the Pavilion. The art program will focus on artists connected to Philadelphia to reflect both the Pavilion’s locale and to support the arts and artists in the city. As such, this position presents a unique opportunity to engage directly with artists, assist with the realization of a civically minded and creative partnership, and to extend the museum’s knowledge and work with Philadelphia artists. The position also offers opportunities for professional training, mentorship, and exposure to a wide variety of activities of a fast-paced curatorial Department within a large institutional setting.
The application deadline is Friday, May 20, 2022.
