The British Museum is seeking a specialist glass conservator to conserve eight archaeologically significant glass vessels from the collection of the Archaeological Museum at the American University of Beirut (AUB). The glass vessels were heavily damaged during the 2020 explosion in Beirut city and require full reconstruction of the vessels, structural fills, treatment documentation and advice for display, packing and transport to AUB. The post holder will be a part of the Beirut Glass Project (an international collaboration between the British Museum and AUB), will have a specialist knowledge in the care and conservation of archaeological glass, a significant post-graduate experience of practical working in this field and will focus on the conservation of eight archaeological glass vessels.

Key Responsibilities:
•To act as a key team member for the conservation of eight archaeological glass vessels including removal of old conservation materials, reconstruction of vessels and making structural fills
•To assess condition and carry out all necessary aspects of conservation under the British Museum guidelines
•To document conservation treatments and materials under the AUB guidelines
•To advise on packing and the transportation of the vessels to AUB following conservation
•To work and collaborate with conservators and other colleagues in the British Museum
•To organize own workflow within the team to ensure project delivery to time and to budget
•To act as an advocate for The British Museum and liaise with specialists and colleagues from the Archaeological Museum at the AUB.
Person Specification:
•Recognized professional conservation qualification to degree level or equivalent experience in the conservation of glass
•Considerable post qualification experience of working and specializing in glass conservation
•Excellent demonstrable practical skills in glass conservation
•Understanding the deterioration processes of archaeological glass
•Strong understanding of conservation theory and ethical decision making
•Relevant knowledge of Health and Safety
•Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills
•Ability to work independently and organize own work/time to deliver agreed outcomes
•Demonstrable team working and communication skills
•Open and effective communication with good spoken and written English
•Experience of communicating/presenting to stakeholders
•Pass a colour vision test
•Good IT skills
