In 2021, Trustees made the decision to decommission the restaurant in the room with the mural by Rex Whistler, created in 1927, which will instead become a gallery. The mural includes details which are racist. An artist will be commissioned to develop a creative and critical response to the mural and its contexts. Interpretation on the mural itself, its reception, and its wider contexts, will be developed. A Project Curator is sought to coordinate the development and delivery of this project working with the artist and various Tate teams until the room reopens in 2023.
The Project Curator, Tate Britain (Rex Whistler Project) will act as primary contact and lead liaison for the artist, coordinate workflows, production and install deadlines across the project and manage the budget. The Project Curator will play a key role in the clear and effective communication of the multiple programmes of work to stakeholders across Tate. The role will work closely with the Design & Production and Estates teams, as well as external fabricators and consultants on the delivery of the project. The role will also work regularly and closely with colleagues from across Curatorial, Learning, Digital, Press, Visitor Experience, and Internal Comms teams.
You will be an experienced curator or specialist with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the issues surrounding commissioning art for museums. With an established network of contacts, you will also be a first-class communicator who can write for a variety of audiences with an authorative and accessible voice.
