The British Museum is seeking to appoint a Project Curator to work with colleagues to research the history of the collections in the British Museum and identify priorities for further work. The intention is to focus on large scale patterns and processes, rather than on individual collections and collectors. The research will involve analysis of numerical data, synthesis of existing research, some detailed archival work and an understanding of the wider context of the history of museum collections.
Key areas of responsibility:
- Research large-scale patterns in the chronology and sources of the development of the British Museum collection, and of the pathways by which objects entered the collection, using information in existing collections databases.
- Place the results of this analysis into broader historical contexts
- Syntheses of other research on the history of the Museum and the collection
- Upgrade and amend documentation about collectors and contexts of acquisition on the Museum’s databases as required
- Write reports summarizing the results of the research for internal use
Person specification:
With first degree in an appropriate subject area such as History, Art History, Archaeology, Anthropology, Digital Humanities, Museum Studies, the successful candidate will have a demonstrable experience at Undergraduate or Masters level of independent research and an understanding of workings of collection based organisations. They will also have some experience of working with a collection, experience and some publications in peer reviewed journals or book submitted or in print. With ability to work on their own to direction and strong time management skills, they will be an open, effective communicator and a team player.
