Project Curator (Cultural Legacies)
Salary: £22k – £25k per annum, depending on experience. Full time (37.5 hours per week)
Contract: 23 months fixed term contract.
Bluecoat is looking for a Project Curator to work on our Cultural Legacies programme. The post, funded by the John Ellerman Foundation, will interrogate our history of working with artists from diverse backgrounds who have explored postcolonial themes and issues around cultural identity. They will be responsible for bringing this history into dialogue with the present by curating a high-profile exhibition, featuring existing and newly commissioned work.
Material in Bluecoat’s archive will provide a starting point from which to research and develop a programme relevant to contemporary debates about race equality, visibility and representation, and decolonising histories, which have been brought into sharper focus by Black Lives Matter.
The Project Curator will work with our programme and participation teams to devise exhibition interpretation and a related contextual public programme. This will be targeted at diverse audiences, particularly communities of Black people and People of Colour who might not currently engage with the arts.
We are looking for someone with a relevant background in contemporary art who is excited by new and emerging artists, has an interest in the development of Black art in Britain in the 1980s and 90s, and is committed to engaging with diverse audiences. The successful candidate will receive mentoring tailored to their development needs throughout the period.
Are you that empowering individual who can throw themselves into interrogating Bluecoat’s rich arts heritage, and work with our creative team to devise a substantial exhibition in our gallery? We’re looking for a creative thinker, with an eye for detail and great organisational and interpersonal skills.
Bluecoat acknowledges that its current workforce does not reflect the cultural and ethnic make-up of our audience, and we therefore welcome applications from candidates from as diverse a range of backgrounds as possible, who meet the required criteria.
