The British Museum is seeking a dedicated individual with excellent documentation and sleuthing skills to join the Blythe House decant project in preparation for a move to the new British Museum Archaeological Research Centre (BM_ARC). The main purpose of this role is to complete due diligence research on unregistered material, and documentation of registered and unregistered collection-related material, at Blythe House. Problem-solving is a key aspect of the role, and a flexible approach to working is essential.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
•Improve the documentation of registered and unregistered collection-related material, checking relevant archival records and documents and investigating further literature including sale catalogues and relevant websites as required.
•Review inventory of unregistered material against existing records on the Museum’s collection management system (MI+) and historical collection registers and deposit lists.
•To work as a member of a project team and assist in the general day-to-day running of the project.
•To liaise with project stakeholders, including staff in curatorial departments, archivists, collection managers and conservators.
•Report on progress against project objectives to the Project Curator: Collection Documentation and Research, changing the focus of the work as advised, in line with project objectives.
•To build an understanding of museums and relevant best practice.
•Other duties as assigned.
Person Specification:
•Educated to degree level in anthropology, cultural heritage, archaeology, or other relevant subject.
•Experience of working with a collection or archive.
•Knowledge of research techniques and the use of archive sources.
•Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills
•Highly self-motivated with organisation and time management skills.
•An open and effective communicator, both verbally and written, who can work well independently and as part of a team.
