The Project Curator for the African Photography Project will lead research and develop publicly accessible initiatives based on Africa’s photographic and associated object collections. This role is part of the Museum’s African Histories and Heritage Photography programme and will contribute to the Museum’s digitisation and documentation projects. The Curator will be key in driving this programme, collaborating with both African and UK partners.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead research on Africa’s photographic collections and external partners involved in the African Histories and Heritage Photography Programme.
- Make the collection publicly accessible through publications, digital platforms, displays, and broadcasts.
- Upgrade and improve the documentation of Africa’s photographic collection.
- Develop strategies for the exhibition of Africa’s photographic collections within the Museum and in external locations.
- Advocate for the Museum and the African Photography Project.
- Seek funding to support the African Photography Project as appropriate.
About You:
- BA/BSc or equivalent in Anthropology or a related field.
- Experience working with archival photograph collections, particularly those relating to Africa.
- Knowledge of museum documentation and digitisation processes.
- Experience in curating temporary exhibitions or gallery refurbishments.
- Public engagement experience in a museum context.
- Publications in peer-reviewed journals or books.
