The British Museum is seeking a Project Curator: Archaeological Site Archives to join the Collection Projects and Resources department. The main purpose of this role is to work as part of a project to improve the documentation and organisation of the British Museum’s archaeological assemblages at Blythe House, in preparation for the move to the new British Museum Archaeological Research Collection (BM_ARC) in Reading. To contribute to post-excavation archiving and site assessment, to help rationalise archaeological fieldwork archives, and build an understanding of the research potential of the collection.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
- To contribute to the assessment and rationalisation of historically excavated archaeological site archives.
- To contribute to upgrading the documentation of archaeological site archives.
- To contribute to improving the accessibility of these archives for research purposes.
- To work as a member of a project team, including specialist staff in other departments.
- To act as an advocate for the project.
- To assist in the general day-to-day running of the project.
- To report on progress against plan to Project Curator: Archaeological Assemblages and Site Archives.
- To change the focus of work as needed in line with project priorities, as advised by line manager.
- To build an understanding of museums and archaeological archiving standards.
- Other duties as assigned.
Person Specification:
- Education: BA/BSc (or equivalent) in archaeology or relevant subject, or equivalent professional experience.
- Specific technical/professional skills & experience: knowledge of archaeological excavation and research techniques; knowledge of archaeological archiving standards; experience of post-excavation processes and the creation of archaeological archive for deposit.
- Work experience: experience of working with excavated archaeological assemblages and their associated site archive; may previously have worked for a contract unit, especially in finds processing/post-excavation analyses and archiving.
- Specific interpersonal skills: open, effective communicator with good spoken and written English; ability to work as part of a team; self-motivated.
