Proposal for the participation of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands in Venice Visual Arts Biennale 2013

The Institut Ramon Llull (IRL), a consortium created to promote the Catalan language and culture internationally, has convened a competition to contract a project curator, to prepare an artistic proposal for the Catalonia and Balearic Islands participation for the 55th Venice Visual Arts Biennale 2013, within the Collateral Events programme.

The project’s total execution budget will be 300,000 euros. This artistic proposal must conform to the conceptual framework, will have to include newly created work and must represent the Catalan and Balearic contemporary artistic creation mantainig a fertile dialogue with the main contemporary trends.

The winning project will be selected by a jury, chaired by Bartomeu Marí (director of the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona) and whose members are: Glòria Picazo (director of Centre d’Art La Panera), Gerard Vilar (Phd and Professor in Philosophy at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) , Xavier Antich (director of the Patronat of Fundació Antoni Tàpies), Marta Gili (director of the Jeu de Paume), Piedad Solans (Phd in Art History and independent art critic) and Àlex Susanna (deputy director of the IRL).

The project competition is divided into three phases.

The first, Participation, ends at 12 h (midday) on 22 Juny 2012. Participation in this phase requires the submission of a C.V. and a brief report, one page approximately, that reflects general ideas for the proposal within the conceptual framework.

The jury will select a maximum of five projects for a second phase (the Ideas Phase) in which participants are going to be required to develop their initial proposal.

The third phase involves the contracting and execution of the winning project.

Participants invited to take part in the Ideas phase will each receive €1,000.

The winning project in the Ideas phase will receive a prize of €4,000 and will be contracted by the Institut Ramon Llull in accordance with the following sums:

– € 2,000 (excluding VAT) to draw up the project which the Institut Ramon Llull must submit to the Venice Visual Arts Biennale Foundation to present the candidacy to Eventi Collaterali.

– € 4,000 euros (excluding VAT) to development and management of the wining proposal during 2013 until the end of the Catalan and Balearic participation in the Venice Visual Arts Biennale.
