GENERAL INFORMATION:

Cologne is among the most active cultural sites in Germany. Many artistic activities carried out there specifically target the difficult moments of the city’s past, specially related to the Second World War and the Nazi period in Germany 1933-1945. Various activities are being carried out and artists are being motivated to make these aspects of local history visible and accessible to the public through arts and culture.

The artistic practices in Lebanon dedicated to war & civil war, political and social violence, reconstruction and culture activism and their impact on the post-war cultural scene in the country shall build a base to discover the respective activities in Cologne.

The residence is dedicated to encourage the participants to share their professional experience, enhance their knowledge by carrying out archive research and open a unique field of inspiration for new artistic projects.

FRAMEWORK:

The residence is divided into three periods:

1st-16th September: introduction to the cultural scene in Cologne, the archives and a public presentation of the artist and her/his works within the context of the residency.

This phase will be carried in cooperation with the coordinator of the project and includes daily activities. The detailed program will be developed based on the preferences of the residing artist.

17th September – 14th October: access to the archives of Cologne including the Nazi period archive of the NS-Dokumentationszentrum and the city archive. Unique documents, testimonies, films and audio-records are on display.

This phase will be carried out in cooperation with a language assistant and also includes daily activities.

15th October – 30th November: period of time dedicated to work out an artistic project based on the gathered materials.

Access to archives will be still granted, however no compulsory activities are planned.

By the end of the residency period a preliminary public presentation of the outcome of the program will be carried out by the artist and hosted by one of the partner institutions in Cologne.

The selected participant is expected to present/ show the outcome of the work in UMAM D&R/ The Hangar and in Cologne within a period of one year starting December 2012. The project must be submitted to The Hangar by end of March 2013.
