Overview
Kunsthal Mechelen is inviting applications for a curator-mediator to realize an art commission in public space. This project is part of the European initiative, WATSUPS (Water As The Source of Urban Public Space), which aims to enhance biodiversity and strengthen the connection between residents and the Dijle River in Mechelen.

- Budget: 200,000 euros (including VAT)
- Location: The area around the bridge at Olivetenvest, which connects the Keerdok and Dijlestraat, as well as the city center and nearby neighborhoods.
- Role: Develop a visual artwork in collaboration with an artist. Coordinate the production and integration of the work in public space, ensuring alignment with project objectives. Handle preparations, including project descriptions, studio visits, and budgeting. Guide the selection process from longlist to final choice with an advisory committee. Engage with local residents and stakeholders. Produce reports and documentation.
About WATSUPS
WATSUPS is a European project where the City of Mechelen develops the area around the Dijle River and passes on the knowledge to another city. The project focuses on improving biodiversity and connecting residents with the river. It includes creating new swimming zones, quay walls, and green spaces. Art plays a significant role at three different locations, including the bridge at Olivetenvest.
About Kunsthal Mechelen
Kunsthal Mechelen is a dynamic and open contemporary arts house without a central location, extending its activities throughout the city, including public spaces. It offers a platform for diverse voices and operates without a fixed artistic framework. The institution seeks to showcase art that questions, explores, and reimagines the world in all its complexity.
Applicant Profile
- Experience: At least 5 years as a curator or mediator.
- Expertise: Experience with art commissions and/or producing artworks for third parties.
- Skills: Strong vision of contemporary visual art and an extensive network in the art sector. Effective networking and communication skills. Ability to work systematically and respect deadlines.
Project Objectives
- Artwork Goal: Contribute to the revaluation of Olivetenvest and shape the identity of the area.
- Biodiversity: The artwork should convey the concept of biodiversity to the public and avoid disrupting ecosystems.
- Community Engagement: Build local support through citizen panels during development and production.
- Sustainability: The artwork will be part of the City of Mechelen’s collection, maintained for future generations, and align with Kunsthal Mechelen’s mission of inclusivity.
Application Process
- Submission: Send motivation and portfolio (maximum 5 A4 pages or a video) by September 30, 2024, to kunsthal@mechelen.be.
- Selection: Chosen candidates will be contacted by November 1, 2024. In the second round, candidates will submit a project proposal and budget, with fair compensation provided.
