The Times Square Alliance seeks an experienced contemporary art producer to manage projects and support all aspects of its high-profile public art program, Times Square Arts.
The mission of Times Square Arts is to collaborate with contemporary artists to experiment and engage with one of the world’s most iconic urban places. Times Square is arguably the world’s largest public platform for innovative contemporary performance and visual arts, with 300,000 – 450,000 people passing through it daily. It has always been a place of risk, innovation and creativity, and the Arts Program ensures these qualities remain central to the district’s unique identity. Previous artists include Laurie Anderson, Tania Bruguera, Sophie Calle, Mel Chin, Helga Davis, Tracey Emin, Ryoji Ikeda, Alfredo Jaar, Isaac Julien, Jesper Just, Nature Theater of Oklahoma, Rashaad Newsome, Yoko Ono, Jay Scheib, Pipilotti Rist and Shahzia Sikander. Previous partnering organizations include the AIA/Center for Architecture, Clocktower, FI:AF/Crossing the Line, The Guggenheim, The Kitchen, LMCC/River to River, NASA, National Sawdust, The New Museum, Performa, the Queens Museum, Urban Design Forum, The Whitney and World Science Festival.
Candidates should:
- Have significant experience producing and shepherding projects and/or events within at least one of the following fields: visual arts including sculpture, installation and/or video; performing arts including contemporary music, dance, theater and/or performance art; and architecture and/or design.
- Have experience managing art programs within an organization including research, planning, budgeting, timelines, artist contracting, production/execution, marketing, communications and documentation.
- Be articulate, meticulous, organized, proactive, curious, funny, cool under pressure, knowledgable about the field, and passionate about engaging diverse publics in important conversations through and around contemporary public art.
More specifically, the Public Art Manager will:
- Collaborate with Public Art Director on program visioning and curatorial research.
- Attend early meetings with Public Art Director to solicit and shape proposals, including complex technical requirements for Times Square.
- Assist with various proposal / approval / selection processes.
- Draft Agreements with artists and partners.
- Build project timelines and budgets, and track deliverables, invoices and payments.
- Obtain necessary permits.
- Coordinate and facilitate production meetings and collaborate with Operations staff to generate “runs of show,” and site and staffing plans.
- Coordinate with programmers of electronic billboards on Midnight Moment content.
- Hire and supervise project-specific tech/production vendors, front-of-house staff, etc, as needed.
- Collaborate with Communications department on Marketing and Communications.
- Support the program in a variety of other ways.
