The Public Programs Coordinator helps support, conceptualize, implement and evaluate public programs with special focus on administrative support and program planning. These programs aim to increase audience engagement, feature racial, ethnic and generational diversity,  and encourage engagement with the Barnes, while creatively illuminating the collection, Barnes Foundation history, and special exhibitions. Reporting to the Curator of Public Programs, this individual supports the current suite of programs while participating in conceptualizing and introducing new initiatives through the Public Programs department. The Public Programs Coordinator is also vital for maintaining relationships with internal departments and stakeholders, and with our core artistic and community partners.

  • Bachelor’s in Art History, Museum Studies, Education or a related field with 2-3 years in a museum or programming role OR some college study in one of the fields listed previously with 3-5 years of commensurate work experience
  • Superior project management and organizational skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrated interest in creative programming
  • Superior computer skills, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Flexible, with strong organizational skills
  • Sound judgment and ability to work independently to identify priorities, handle multiple issues simultaneously, and meet deadlines
  • Professional and courteous demeanor with a strong aptitude for serving audiences and engaging community
  • Candidates with a comparable range of professional and educational experience will be considered and are encouraged to apply

Job Specific Competencies:

  • Supports the Curator of Public Programs to design, implement, document and evaluate programming on site at the Barnes, and/or virtually, as is required.
  • Serves as a primary contact for artists, presenters and partners for ongoing Barnes programs including First Friday, Family Days, lectures, screenings and special programs.
  • Responsible for the timely development, submission and tracking of artists contracts and related payments.
  • Provides direct on-site support during public programs at the Barnes – serving as a key contact for performers, presenters, fellow Barnes colleagues and external partners.
  • Drafts program descriptions and works closely with the Web, Ticketing and Editorial departments to facilitate quarterly program listings online.
  • Serves as the department’s central contact for events management; working closely with Events, Facilities, AV, Security, and Visitor Guest and Protection Services to reserve Barnes resources, and coordinate/execute programs.
  • Works closely with the Marketing department on the promotion of Barnes initiatives and programming while engaging artistic and community partners to support audience and revenue goals within the department.
  • Conducts research to identify potential artistic and community partners, in and out of the Greater Philadelphia region, to support Barnes programming.
  • Invites new audiences to engage with the Barnes by presenting at community meetings, getting to know our community partners and sharing information on the Barnes and its program opportunities.
  • Serves as a vital connection between the Barnes’ Community Engagement and Family Programs department to strengthen our ties to and resonance with ongoing community partners and collaborators.
  • Supports public programs through careful and detailed administrative work, thoughtful planning, and clear communication to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Performs other duties as requested.
