
Research Assistant
Job Location: Brooklyn Institute of Arts & Sciences (Brooklyn Museum) – Brooklyn, NY
Position Type: Part Time
We seek a Research Assistant for an upcoming exhibition on the history of zines by artists in North America since 1970, which will open at the Museum in September 2023. The Research Assistant provides administrative support; carries out research on artists to help identify and locate potential zines and artworks for the exhibition, and to gather primary sources for publication in the exhibition catalogue; and helps write artist bios, zine synopses, and in-gallery interpretive materials (such as extended labels). Developing these materials will entail corresponding with artists, visiting archives and libraries, and maintaining our database by entering detailed information about the zines and artworks.
Qualifications:
- A successful candidate will meet many of these requirements, and have the desire and capacity to learn the rest on the job.
- Master’s degree in art history, or current Ph.D. candidate, with significant coursework in contemporary art in North America
- Two or more years of research experience
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
- Superior organizational skills and attention to detail
- Flexibility and proven ability to prioritize among multiple projects with competing deadlines
- Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office/Teams, Adobe Acrobat Pro, and Photoshop
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team
- Fluency in Spanish is a plus
- Experience with databases such as TMS (The Museum System) and bibliographic software is preferred
- Based in New York City
Responsibilities:
- Assist with research on artists and bibliographic research for the exhibition catalogue
- Coordinate activities regarding the prospective checklist and potential loans, and maintain the database of artworks
- Aid with the composition of interpretive material, including artist bios, labels, and image captions
- Other duties as assigned
