Position Summary
Trier University’s Department of Art History in Faculty III, led by Prof. Dr. Ulrike Gehring, is seeking a Research Assistant. The role is focused on the early modern or pre-modern period, especially on the interplay between art, science, nature, and technology from 1600 to 1900. Responsibilities include research, teaching one course per term, supporting the department’s research initiatives, supervising student assistants, and contributing to English-language publications. There is also an opportunity to engage with the interdisciplinary research association TRANSMARE, although maritime focus is optional.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop a PhD or habilitation thesis in art history (early modern/pre-modern)
- Teach one course per week during the academic term
- Assist in department research, teaching, and organization
- Supervise and mentor student assistants
- Contribute to English-language publications
- Participate in TRANSMARE research association projects
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Art History or Visual Studies (required for PhD); PhD preferred for habilitation
- Strong research interest in early modern or pre-modern art history, especially in the relationship between art, science, nature, and technology from 1600 to 1900
- Excellent command of English (written and spoken)
- Ability to work collaboratively and maintain an active presence on campus
- Structured work approach and commitment to departmental contributions
