The Art Institute of Chicago is seeking a Research Associate to support the Department of Painting and Sculpture of Europe. This role focuses on research, writing, and content production for collections, exhibitions, and institutional publications. The position contributes to both scholarly research and public-facing interpretation, working closely with curators on a wide range of projects.

The Research Associate assists in developing and disseminating art historical research across exhibitions, gallery rotations, and digital platforms. The role combines academic research with curatorial and administrative support, contributing to the documentation, interpretation, and accessibility of the collection.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct art historical and art market research for collections, exhibitions, loans, and acquisitions
  • Investigate ownership, publication, and exhibition histories of artworks
  • Produce labels, interpretive texts, and exhibition materials
  • Maintain and update object records and museum databases
  • Support curators in research and administrative tasks
  • Prepare materials for advisory committee meetings
  • Assist in the development and implementation of exhibitions and installations
  • Contribute to online publication of collection research
  • Respond to inquiries from scholars, peers, and the public
  • Participate in gallery tours, lectures, and academic events

Candidate Profile

  • Master’s degree in art history or related field (required)
  • Minimum of two years of museum experience
  • Strong research, writing, and organizational skills
  • Familiarity with collection databases and digital tools
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite
  • Knowledge of relevant foreign languages (Dutch, French, German, Italian, or Spanish preferred)
  • Detail-oriented, proactive, and collaborative approach
  • Strong communication and project management skills
  • Commitment to inclusive and equitable institutional practices
