At the Berlin University of the Arts in the Faculty of Design – Institute for the History and Theory of Design – as part of the DFG project “A Critical Art History of International Exhibitions and World Exhibitions: Decentering Fashion and Moderns/A Critical Art History of International and World Expositions”: Decentering Fashion and Modernities” in the sub-project “De-/Colonial Modernities: Representing ‘Peripheries’ at World’s Fairs”.
The world exhibitions of the 19th and early 20th centuries provided important impetus for the history of art and fashion. In the research project, the intertwined histories of art and fashion in the context of world exhibitions are to be fundamentally reappraised against the background of colonialism, imperialism and globalization. The sub-project focuses on questions about artistic and curatorial strategies of Latin American presentations in the field of tension between ‘periphery’ and ‘metropolis’, about the role of different artistic media in connection with colonial and postcolonial localizations in international exhibitions and about implicit and explicit temporalities and modern constructions.
It is one of two sub-projects to research ‘peripheral’ positions at the world exhibitions of the 19th and early 20th centuries from an art historical and art historical perspective. A theoretical location and/or content-related discussion within critical studies, postcolonial and gender-critical discourses is desirable.
The position offers diverse insights into the art-scientific work and the cooperation in a trans-university and international team/network.
