The Virginia Spate Research Fellowships support Australian researchers in art and visual culture to undertake a three-month research residency in Paris, making use of the city’s archives, collections and research infrastructures.
The programme is designed to enable significant progress on research projects where access to Paris-based resources will materially enhance the quality, scope or completion of the work.
About the Fellowship
Each year, two fellowships are awarded: one for University of Sydney staff or PhD candidates, and one open category for researchers in art and visual culture.
Fellows receive financial and logistical support to conduct independent research in Paris, including assistance with accommodation and access to institutional networks.
Fellowship Includes
- $20,000 AUD grant for travel and living expenses

Eligibility
The fellowship is open to Australian citizens or permanent residents conducting research in art and visual culture.
- Applicants must be PhD candidates or higher-level researchers (or equivalent professional standing)
- Must not have previously received a Power Institute fellowship
- Only one Paris Art Fellowship application per year is permitted

Fellowship 2: Open to all eligible researchers in the field
Selection Criteria
- Quality and originality of the research project
- Relevance and accessibility of Paris-based research materials
- Professional development impact of the fellowship
Key Conditions
- Residency duration: 3 months in Paris
- Funding provided approximately 6 weeks before travel
- Applicants must demonstrate clear use of Paris research resources
- Fellows must submit a report or public outcome after completion
