Fondation Grantham – Research Residency in Visual Arts

Location: Saint-Edmond-de-Grantham, Quebec, Canada
Overview: An annual program offering a CA$5,000 grant and a four-week residency to specialists recognized in the visual arts, environment, or related disciplines. The residency focuses on research and writing, aiming to culminate in public outreach projects such as publications, group exhibitions, or public programs like symposia and workshops.
Eligibility:
- Researchers residing in Quebec, elsewhere in Canada, or abroad.
- Individuals affiliated with research institutions, independent researchers, art critics, exhibition curators, and artists with a curatorial practice.
- Projects must align with the Foundation’s mission, encompassing practices such as photography, installation, sculpture, painting, graphic art, performance, sound art, digital, and media practices.
- Duos are eligible; however, the grant conditions remain the same.
- Projects toward a university degree or dissertation publication are not eligible.
- International applicants are responsible for their own travel and visa arrangements.
Residency Details:
- A four-week stay dedicated to research and writing.
- Presentation of ongoing work to a general audience.
- Potential development of public outreach projects in collaboration with the Foundation, subject to additional funding.
Support Provided:
- CA$5,000 grant, inclusive of living allowance, residency fee, public presentation fee, and research grant.
- Logistical and administrative support for grant applications and project production.
Application Requirements:

- a presentation page with researcher’s name and contact details (email, postal address and phone number)
- a general presentation of research interests and methodology (1 page maximum)
- a description of the proposed project, specifying its relevance relative to the Foundation’s mission, any other potential contributors, as well as a desired schedule for the stay (2 pages maximum)
- an overview of expected results and project impact (1 page maximum)
- a curriculum vitae (3 pages maximum)
- 1 or 2 examples of previous publications
- if applicable: documentation of 1 or 2 curatorial projects or other relevant projects (5 pages maximum, with full captions and credits)

Residency Location:
Located next to a small river in a wooded area on the edge of a forest, the Foundation is situated in the francophone municipality of Saint-Edmond-de-Grantham, approximately 100 km east of Montreal. A living space, workspace, and exhibition space all at once, it was designed to foster an all-season dialogue between the indoor spaces and the outside surroundings.
This residency offers a unique opportunity to engage deeply with environmental issues through visual arts research in a serene and inspiring setting.
