Introduction
ZK/U, an artist-led, independent art residency and project space, offers a unique multidisciplinary residency program. This program provides a living and working space for diverse practitioners – artists, researchers, activists, and professionals from various fields. Their work or approach should explore urban dynamics and experiences.
Program Details
The residency program seeks proposals that challenge norms, adopt daring stances, and incorporate unique perspectives. Suitable proposals may include:
- Conceptual, Contextual, and Interventionist Artistic Positions: Proposals should be contemporary, exploring new ideas and interventions in the artistic realm.
- Urbanism, Geography, Anthropology, Architecture, and Humanities Research: Proposals should focus on experimental research in these fields, with an emphasis on urban studies.
The program fosters mutual learning, collaborations, discussions, and exchanges, benefiting from the diverse disciplines and backgrounds of the residents. The ZK/U building, a repurposed train station in a vibrant public park, serves as a space for urban experimentation and interdisciplinary collaborations.
Upcoming Enhancements
In summer 2024, ZK/U will reopen its renovated and expanded public spaces, enhancing its role as a cultural hub hosting regular events for various audiences. Residents are encouraged to engage in ZK/U’s cultural programs.
Conceptual Framework
Core Themes
ZK/U aims to define its program’s conceptual framework through narratives in the upcoming years. These narratives guide the residency program and provide themes for project proposals:
- Down to Earth – Enjoy the Commons / Trajectories of the Commons: This theme explores shared spaces, reflecting on the challenges and joys in communal areas, informed by game theory, social needs, and cognitive science insights.
- In Realities – Marginalized Urban Perspectives: This narrative sheds light on the diverse facets of urban life, including perspectives on feminist, queer, child, elderly, migrant, and economic aspects of city living.
- Rising Suns and Setting Stars – Re-reading Collective Art and Relational Aesthetics: Focusing on collective art and relational aesthetics, this theme reconsiders artistic authorship and collaborative responsibilities in art.
- Planetary Agencies – Urban Life after Human Hubris: This narrative imagines a future where human actions have significantly impacted urban life, advocating for the inclusion of non-human actors in urban planning and decision-making.
Applicants are encouraged to align their proposals with these narratives, although it is not mandatory.
