The Getty Scholars Program offers residential fellowships for established researchers and professionals to pursue projects related to the 2026–2027 annual theme: Provenance. Scholars will be in residence at the Getty Center or Getty Villa and form part of an international cohort exploring issues around the ownership, circulation, and ethics of art objects.
Program Format

Three-month residency (Sep–Dec or Jan–Mar): $21,500 stipend

Six-month residency (Sep–Mar or Jan–Jun): $43,000 stipend

Nine-month residency (Sep–Jun): $65,000 stipend

Includes housing, travel stipend, workstation, research support, and optional healthcare

Individual and collaborative projects welcome

Special consideration for scholars under the African American Art History Initiative (AAAHI)
Eligibility Criteria

PhD completed before 1 September 2022, or equivalent professional experience

Not eligible if you received a Getty residential grant in the past 6 years

Applicants with PhDs awarded after 1 September 2022 must apply to the Postdoctoral Fellowship program
Annual Theme: Provenance
The 2026–2027 theme explores the provenance of art objects—their histories of ownership, circulation, and collection. The program welcomes projects on topics such as restitution, collecting practices, the art market, and ethical implications of cultural heritage transfer. The Getty encourages critical engagement with its holdings, including the Getty Provenance Index.
