The Burlington Magazine announces its ninth annual scholarship supporting research in French 18th-century fine and decorative arts. The scholarship aims to enable the development of new, object-based research that contributes to art historical discourse and aligns with the type of scholarship published by The Burlington Magazine.
Research funded by this scholarship may lead to the submission of articles for publication in the Magazine. Applications are therefore expected to focus on object-related research.
Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must be studying, or intending to study, at MA, PhD, postdoctoral, or independent research level

Research must fall within the field of French 18th-century fine and decorative arts
-
Research must take place within the funding period (September 2026 – August 2027)

Open to UK and international applicants
Funding and Duration

One award of £12,000 is made annually
-
Funding covers a 12-month period
-
Payments are made in Pound Sterling, typically in quarterly instalments of £3,000
-
The first payment is made within one month of formal award acceptance
-
Some flexibility in payment schedule may be granted with prior approval
-
Any unspent funds at the end of the grant period must be returned

Facility, museum, or archive access fees (including photocopying)

Conference, meeting, workshop, or training travel or registration

General journal subscription costs

Shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide two references for further review.
All correspondence must be conducted in English.
Reporting Requirements
Grant recipients must submit:

An interim report (minimum 2 pages A4) six months after notification

A final report (minimum 2 pages A4) no later than two months after the grant ends, including:

Summary of research outcomes

Spending allocation of awarded funds

A copy of the completed thesis, research document, or publication (when available)

Acknowledgement
Recipients must acknowledge The Burlington Magazine’s support in any publications, presentations, or promotional material related to the funded research. Logos are available upon request.
