Seeking Curator of Estates
Pace Gallery is seeking an experienced curator and scholar to support its ambitious global program with a focus on post-war American art and 20th Century art. As a member of Pace’s newly established Curatorial Department, s/he will be focused on working directly with the foundations and artist estates represented by Pace, as well as select senior artists. The Curator of Estates is responsible for a variety of curatorial and administrative tasks including exhibition research and development; the development of related publications; and writing and editing exhibition-related texts. This role requires significant art historical knowledge of key players in 20th Century art, particularly in the post-war period, with an interest in abstract expressionism, pop art, and minimalism, and maintains an excellent knowledge of the field, including the activities of art galleries, institutions, and related organizations.
Responsibilities
- Serve as primary curator for estate exhibitions in collaboration with CEO or Dealer office, securing museum and private loans, developing checklists, floorplans, budget, and liaising with the exhibition registrar, project manager and other staff
- Function as the primary Liaison with multiple Estates and Foundations as well as select senior artists
- Conduct rigorous research on artist estates represented by Pace, as well as senior artists within the program
- Work with external institutions and collectors to cultivate relationships and source potential loans and consignments
- Serve as curatorial liaison for guest curators and consultants as needed
- Support Pace’s digital and print publication program in collaboration with Pace’s Marketing and Graphics departments by providing enhanced editorial content and feedback; commissioning writers and other content; identifying gaps in research related to an estate or artist, and producing original scholarship on artists when needed
- Propose and curates special group exhibitions when needed
- Assist with development of exhibitions-related programs including artist talks and interviews, curatorial lectures, off- site events, and exhibition tours
- Participate in, and assists with, staff training on exhibitions
- Attend exhibition-related programs and various art world events as needed
Qualifications
- MA or PhD in Art History
- Significant scholarly knowledge of post-war American art and 20th Century art history
- Record of publication including exhibition reviews, interviews, artist profiles, and topical essays
- Positive and enthusiastic interpersonal skills that enable collaborative interaction with all levels of management, staff and the public, effectively gaining the confidence of artists, clients, external partners, and internal staff
- Creativity in thought and action, showing initiative and independence
- Integrity, good judgment, and the highest ethical standards
- Strong multi-tasking and organizational abilities, as well as superior time management skills and the ability to meet deadlines
- A high level of accuracy and attention to detail
- Strong public speaking skills
- Computer competency with Microsoft Office as well as with software specific to the position
- Fluency in English: speaking, reading and writing, additional language(s) a bonus
- Interest in and ability to travel regularly
- Ability to work legally in the United States
