In the autumn of 2021 the museum MUNCH opens in a spectacular new building perched on the shore of Oslo’s Bjørvika Harbour. The museum will house the magnificent gift Edvard Munch (1863-1944) bequeathed to the City of Oslo, consisting of more than 26,000 artworks in addition to his literary notebooks and writings. This is by far the world’s greatest collection of Edvard Munch’s works. MUNCH is also among the largest museums in the world dedicated to an individual artist.
MUNCH also manages the collections bestowed upon the City of Oslo by Rolf Stenersen, Amaldus Nielsen and Ludvig Ravensberg. Our initiatives in the realm of contemporary art will shed light on Edvard Munch’s lasting influence in his own day as well as on present generations of artists.
The museum will trigger fresh, clear and intimate perceptions of Edvard Munch’s art. Visitors will at all times experience the highlights of Edvard Munch’s artistry in parallel with temporary exhibitions of other artists. From our location at Bjørvika, with its unrivalled view of the Oslo Fjord, the museum will offer a comprehensive programme of artistic and cultural experiences on all 13 floors.
