Senior Curator

Storm King Art Center seeks a Senior Curator to provide visionary leadership for its curatorial program, with a focus on modern and contemporary sculpture. The Senior Curator will supervise a team of four and collaborate closely with the Executive Director, Curatorial team, and other departments. This role involves developing exhibitions, permanent commissions, and multi-object loan shows, as well as stewardship of the collection and audience engagement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conceptualize, develop, and execute exhibitions, temporary projects, and site-specific permanent commissions.

  • Develop a medium- and long-term curatorial plan integrating acquisitions, exhibitions, and rotating installations.

  • Supervise curatorial staff and manage departmental budgets.

  • Cultivate relationships with artists, collectors, donors, and partners; commission new works.

  • Lead collection stewardship, including acquisition strategy, conservation, and publication.

  • Represent Storm King publicly, fostering community and national/international partnerships.

  • Support research, scholarship, writing, and educational programming.

  • Mentor staff and ensure professional development.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree, PhD, or equivalent in Art History or related field.

  • 10+ years of curatorial experience in a collecting institution, with focus on sculpture (1960–present).

  • Strong research, writing, and publication record in modern/contemporary art.

  • Proven experience commissioning new works and cultivating donors.

  • Excellent project management, communication, and leadership skills.

  • Knowledge of museum best practices, collection stewardship, and ethical standards.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $120,000–$140,000 annually
