
Senior Curator

Salary: $120,000 – $140,000 per year
Storm King Art Center is a 500-acre outdoor museum in New York’s Hudson Valley dedicated to large-scale sculpture, site-specific commissions, and contemporary art in dialogue with landscape. The institution focuses on the intersection between art, nature, and public experience in an open-air setting.
The Senior Curator will play a key leadership role in shaping Storm King’s curatorial vision, working closely with the Executive Director and senior leadership team. The position involves overseeing curatorial strategy, managing a team, developing exhibitions and commissions, and contributing to the institution’s long-term artistic direction.
Key Responsibilities
- Define and implement curatorial vision and long-term programming strategy
- Develop exhibitions, temporary projects, and site-specific commissions
- Supervise and mentor curatorial staff and manage departmental workflows
- Oversee acquisitions, collection development, and collection stewardship
- Collaborate with artists on new commissions and large-scale outdoor installations
- Coordinate with conservation, exhibitions, and operations teams
- Manage curatorial budgets and multi-year programming plans
- Engage with donors, trustees, and external stakeholders
- Represent the institution publicly through talks, tours, and events
- Contribute to publications, research, and curatorial writing
- Support fundraising and institutional development initiatives
Requirements
- Master’s degree, PhD, or equivalent in Art History or related field
- 10+ years of curatorial experience in a collecting institution
- Specialist knowledge of modern and contemporary sculpture (1960–present)
- Proven experience commissioning artworks and managing large-scale projects
- Strong leadership and team management skills
- Excellent writing, research, and publication record
- Experience with collection stewardship and museum best practices
- Ability to manage budgets and complex institutional projects
- Strong communication and public speaking skills
- Experience working with artists, donors, and institutional partners
