Senior Director of Exhibition Planning

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts invites applications for the Senior Director of Exhibition Planning, who will manage all aspects of the museum’s exhibition, design and publications program.

The Senior Director of Exhibition Planning is responsible for a dynamic team of thirty-five colleagues, including the exhibition planning, design, production, and publications departments, and works collaboratively with curators and departments across the museum on the successful implementation of all special exhibition and gallery projects. Reporting to the Chief Curator and Deputy Director of Art and Education, the Senior Director of Exhibition Planning spearheads a comprehensive planning process to manage a portfolio of exhibition and collection projects in different stages of development over multiple years – including project schedules and budgets, vendor and project management, strategic planning, and development of traveling exhibitions. These range from large-scale loan and collection exhibitions that travel to or from other museums, both nationally and internationally, to tightly focused exhibitions, often drawn from the permanent collection, that circulate to other museums throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The anticipated hire date for this position is July of 2021.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Applicants should have a proven record of successfully leading in a highly collaborative, team-based environment, and work well under pressure to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Applicants should also must have strong organizational, negotiation, accounting, interpersonal, and written, verbal and visual communication skills, as well as experience with budgeting, donor cultivation, and personnel management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.F.A.) in art history, or a similar museum-related field, such as arts or business administration, education, museum studies, or studio art, is required along with a minimum of five years of museum experience.
  • Master’s degree in Art History or a related discipline, or have equivalent applicable experience or training.

Special Requirements

  • Selected candidates must pass a criminal history background check.
  • Position requires employee to file a Statement of Economic Interests form annually.
