The Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (CASVA) at the National Gallery of Art offers Senior Fellowships for scholars to conduct full-time research in residence. Fellows receive an office in the National Gallery’s East Building, housing (subject to availability), and access to the Gallery’s library and art collections, as well as other research resources in Washington, D.C.

- Samuel H. Kress Senior Fellowship (European art before early 19th century)
- William C. Seitz Senior Fellowship (modern and contemporary art)
Eligibility Criteria
- PhD awarded at least five years prior to application or equivalent professional record
- Scholars from any discipline whose work engages with art, artifacts, or visual culture
- Not eligible if currently affiliated with the National Gallery or applying for another Center fellowship
- Reapplication permitted five years after completion of a fellowship
Stipend and Benefits
- $50,000 per academic year, prorated for single-term awards
- Travel allowance for scholarly conferences
- Office space in the East Building
- Housing provided as available
Selection
- Evaluated by an external selection committee of art history and related scholars
- Applications may involve outside readers
- Fellowships cannot be postponed or renewed
