The McBey Studentship

A fully funded PhD opportunity exploring the early career and autobiographical writings of Scottish artist James McBey (1883–1959). The project investigates McBey’s self-fashioning, professional trajectory, and cultural context in early 20th-century Aberdeen.
Studentship Format
- PhD studentship in Art History
- Start date: 1 October 2025 or 1 January 2026
- Home (UK) fee waiver
- Maintenance grant of approx. £20,000/year
- Additional research budget, including support for conference organisation
Eligibility Criteria
- A minimum 2:1 undergraduate degree (or international equivalent) in Art History or a related field
- Master’s degree preferred but not required
- Open to UK and international applicants (international applicants must cover the fee difference)

- Access to the James McBey Print Room and Library at Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums
- Opportunity to contribute to scholarship on British etching and art historiography
