New York’s leading presenter of contemporary art projects in public spaces seeks an Exhibitions Intern for summer 2017.
As the leader in its field, Public Art Fund brings dynamic contemporary art to a broad audience in New York City by mounting ambitious free exhibitions of international scope and impact that offer the public powerful experiences with art and the urban environment.
Public Art Fund offers an open and collaborative work environment with opportunities for exposure to all aspects of the organization’s activities. This is an ideal position to gain valuable experience in every stage of planning and realizing large-scale public art projects – from initial brainstorming to the installation of artworks. The Exhibitions Intern will also have the opportunity to learn about art commissions, public programs, and consulting activities in addition to learning about the inner workings of a not-for-profit art organization.
Primary responsibilities:
- Assisting the Exhibitions Department in all facets of research on artists, sites, and fabrication of artworks as well as on-site installation and de-installation of projects
- Assisting with the development of proposals for future projects, including creating renderings and presentation materials
- Site inspections to assess condition of works; assisting in the creation of condition reports
Additional responsibilities may also include:
- Liaising with artists, curators, galleries, and vendors
- Researching, purchasing, and delivering materials to project sites
- Assisting with exhibition openings and special events
- Special projects as needed
Requirements:
- Must be a current undergraduate or graduate student
- Must be able to commit to at least two full days per week from mid-May through August 2017
- Experience with graphics/design tools; g. Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Sketch-up, etc.
- General knowledge and willingness to learn art fabrication methods and processes
- Organized, detail oriented, creative thinker, able to problem solve, and effectively manage multiple tasks simultaneously
- Ability to perform outdoor physical tasks as part of the install/de-install of artwork
- Knowledge of contemporary art
This internship offers a small daily stipend and/or school credit where appropriate.
