Kim? Summer Residency Open Call – Riga, Latvia

Kim? Contemporary Art Centre invites international artists, curators, and writers to apply for its first-ever short-term summer residency in Riga. This residency supports ongoing artistic dialogues and collaborations between Latvian and international art communities.
Residency Details:
- Residency Period:
- Option 1: 1 June – 13 July 2025
- Option 2: 17 July – 31 August 2025
(Applicants can select their preferred dates on the application form.)
- Participants: Two art professionals will be hosted simultaneously, totaling four residents over the summer.
- Focus:
- Collaborations with Latvian partners
- Engaging with Riga’s vibrant art scene and rich cultural history
- Participation in at least one public event (talk, screening, discussion, etc.) during the residency
Accommodation & Facilities:
- Living Arrangements:
- Shared two-bedroom apartment in Riga city centre (shared bathroom, kitchen, and living room)
- Studio Space:
- Private studio (approx. 40 sqm) at Hanzas 22, with at least two south-facing windows, equipped with basic furniture and additional materials upon request
- Additional Perks:
- A bike and bike lock provided to each resident
- Wireless internet available in both the apartment and studio
About Hanzas 22 & Kim?:
- Hanzas 22:
- A historic school building in central Riga, currently being activated as an art venue with affordable studios, and soon to be renovated as Kim?’s permanent international residency and artist studio centre (target renovation by 2029).
- This summer, Hanzas 22 will also host “EDEN,” a contemporary art festival featuring a group exhibition, reading room, talks, and performances.
- Kim? Contemporary Art Centre:
- A leading institution in Latvia’s contemporary art scene, dedicated to innovative projects, exhibitions, and research.
- Committed to fostering local and international collaborations and engaging diverse audiences.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Age: Over 25 years old
- Experience: Minimum five years of professional experience
- Collaboration: An ongoing or pre-existing (or proposed) collaboration with a Latvian artist, curator, or collective is strongly encouraged (must include a confirmation letter from the Latvian partner)
- Geography: Applicants must be traveling from within Europe due to environmental concerns
- Application: Must include a portfolio (at least 10 images with descriptions) and a signed confirmation letter from a Latvian partner
What’s Provided:
- Studio: Private studio space with basic furniture and potential additional materials (discussed during a pre-arrival call)
- Accommodation: Shared two-bedroom apartment
- Transport: Bike and bike lock for the residency period
- Connectivity: Wireless internet in the apartment and studio
Note: Travel expenses are not covered, and families cannot be accommodated (partial living expense coverage available if sharing an apartment with another resident). The residency is not currently accessible to individuals with disabilities.
