About
The Martin Roth Initiative offers temporary support for artists and cultural actors at risk, allowing them to relocate to Germany and continue their work within a safe cultural environment. This initiative helps fund their stay, artistic production, and collaboration with host organisations in Germany.
Eligibility Criteria
Artists and cultural actors worldwide who:
- Are committed to an open society, peace, democracy, and freedom.
- Are at risk due to their work or other circumstances, experiencing restrictions or threats to their freedom.
- Have recently left their country or are unsafe in their current location.
- Do not have access to a safe abode (e.g., dual citizenship or permanent residency).
- Have the language skills necessary to collaborate with a host institution.
- Are actively working artistically/culturally and have proven relevance to their field (hobby artists are not eligible).
- Note: EU citizens or those who have previously received MRI funding are not eligible.
Host Organisations
Cultural institutions or collectives in Germany (e.g., museums, theatres, festivals, etc.).
Funding Includes
- Monthly scholarship.
- Individual support (insurance, psychosocial support, language courses, networking).
- Financial support for additional personnel if necessary.
- Counselling, further training, and networking activities.
- Assistance in the visa process.
Scholarship Duration
Up to 15 months.
Selection Criteria
- Threat/risk situation for the applicant.
- Quality and social relevance of the applicant’s previous work.
- Quality of the application and capacity of the host organisation to support the artist.
- Gender and diversity considerations.
