Introduction
UNIDEE Residency Programs and Cittadellarte-Fondazione Pistoletto invite you to apply for the fifth module of the residency program titled “Neither on Land nor at Sea: Meeting by the Mediterranean Im/Possible.” This module, taking place in Autumn 2023, is co-curated by UNIDEE Visiting Curator Chiara Cartuccia and invited mentors Qalqalah قلقلة.
Overview
The “Neither on Land nor at Sea” module encourages exploration of unreducible complexities and shifting landscapes. It invites participants to collectively examine how geography has been historically, socially, and politically constructed. The project seeks to pluralize Mediterranean concepts and spaces as arenas for worldmaking and experimentation in communal living. It adopts un-grounded geographies and intersecting historicities as meeting points to discuss the role of situated practices and shared processes in promoting social transformations toward epistemic justice.
Programme
The “Gestures of Untranslatability” module, Module V, Autumn 2023, runs from December 11 to 17. It is co-curated with invited mentors Qalqalah قلقلة. This platform, founded in 2018 in France, is dedicated to producing, translating, and circulating artistic, theoretical, and literary research in French, Arabic, and English. The module departs from the geographical framework to problematize relationships with the languages we speak from both political and affective perspectives. It explores how to deterritorialize language usage, acknowledging their power dynamics and potential for deviation, commoning, and resistance. Participants will engage in collective writing, translation, and editing, and reflect on fiction, storytelling, identity, and linguistic categories.
Participants
Up to 10 residents will be selected for the module. The program welcomes international participants from diverse backgrounds, including artists, curators, writers, theorists, and activists. Selection will be based on the alignment of the applicant’s work with the curatorial framework and the module’s conceptual positioning.
Practicalities
The residency will be held at Cittadellarte – Fondazione Pistoletto in Biella, Italy. Accommodation is provided, with shared facilities. Travel and living expenses are the responsibility of participants. Limited travel bursaries are available for those in need.
