This full-time professorship is offered for a period of five years, starting on 1 October 2023, in accordance with § 98 Austrian University Act 2002 (Universitätsgesetz 2002) at the Institute for Conservation-Restoration at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.
The education program at the Institute for Conservation-Restoration at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna combines both theory and practice in the conservation of a broad range of cultural assets. The institute closely cooperates with the Academy’s artistic as well as cultural and natural science institutes while maintaining the Academy’s strategic focus in the areas of sustainability and decolonization.
Applicants are expected to demonstrate expertise in the conservation-restoration of painted and unpainted wooden objects with refined and polychrome surfaces. Based on the institute’s strategic goal to further develop the department in the area of conservation-restoration of cultural heritage, expertise in the conservation of historic and contemporary ensembles is required.
Conditions of employment
• a university degree in conservation-restoration with a doctorate or proof of equivalent scientific aptitude
• leadership experience and management skills: planning, organisational, and management skills to be demonstrated, for example, through the management of major conservation and research projects
• experience in research-related, interdisciplinary collaboration with museums, collections and in the field of cultural heritage preservation
• experience at an international level in practical conservation-restoration, in organizing congresses and workshops, in managing research projects and in the acquisition of external funding
• several years of teaching experience, preferably in higher education, as well as the ability and knowledge to implement new, innovative and future-oriented methods in teaching and research
• broad knowledge of material science, use of artistic materials and historical technologies with a focus on wood
• reflective, mediating and critical skills in the fields of methodology and documentation
• ability to work in a team and to resolve conflicts, communication skills in order to implement solutions in a collaborative manner
• willingness to take on organizational tasks, both in academic self-administration (e.g. in committees) and in matters of the study program
• very good German language skills and good knowledge of English; lectures are to be held in German.

The teaching commitment includes individual supervision and advisory of students’ practical projects amounting to 16 hours per week in the central artistic subject Conservation-Restoration.
The monthly gross salary according to the collective agreement for university employees in salary group A1 currently amounts to Euro 5.437,7. The willingness to pay above collective agreement – depending on the candidate’s qualification profile – is given.
