The British Museum is seeking a Project Curator to join the the Endangered Material Knowledege Programme (EMKP) in the Africa, Oceania and Americas department. The main purpose of this role is to provide specialist understanding of material knowledge and ethnographic documentation; to guide the annual EMKP granting process working closely with and advising the global network of scholars; to advocate for the work of EMKP and the Museum through independent and collaborative research and dissemination; to co-ordinate the EMKP’s annual training programme.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
- Be an acknowledged specialist in the anthropology of material culture/knowledge in Africa/Oceania/the Americas/Asia and have experience of ethnographic (digital) documentation, in order to support EMKP grantees from initial application to final ingest of completed project results.
- To guide the EMKP granting process, working in collaboration with the Head of EMKP to manage the annual grant giving process, overseeing the application and review process, supporting and advising prospective applicants, managing grant awards and advising the global community of funded researchers.
- Co-ordinate the annual EMKP training programme in collaboration with other EMKP staff and external specialists, including delivery of lectures/teaching material.
- To supervise EMKP volunteers in delivering collections based projects and lead on integrating the work of EMKP with British Museum collections and activities.
- To assist with reviewing grant results, prepare materials for the website, and other aspects of the programme’s digital offer.
- To collaborate and develop research projects on aspects of material practice including raising money.
- To act as an advocate for EMKP and the British Museum through dissemination of EMKP related work and research in public lectures, conferences and publications.
- To contribute significantly to the management of EMKP in collaboration with the Head of EMKP, and the EMKP Director, and contribute to Department activities where appropriate.
- To support and assist with EMKP activities as appropriate (e.g. seminars, workshops).
- To report regularly to the Head of EMKP on progress.

Person Specification:
Education: BA/BSc (or equivalent) in anthropology or related discipline.
Specific technical/professional skills & experience: experience of working in a museum, archive or with collections and/or working in academic anthropology or related disciplines.
Specific managerial skills: some experience of managing small projects/budgets/teams; experience of working with stakeholders in Africa, Oceania, the Americas or Asia.
Specific interpersonal skills: open, effective communicator with good spoken and written English; ability to work as part of a team; ability to present in public in an engaging manner.
Publications record: experience of academic dissemination through conference papers, workshops and some publications (public facing or academic).
