One of the largest and most important art collections in the world, Royal Collection runs to more than a million objects, including 8000 paintings and 3000 miniatures. Spread among fifteen Royal residences and former residences across the UK, displayed at exhibitions at The King’s Galleries in London and Edinburgh and via loans, it is unique in both scale and variety.
As Senior Curator, you’ll play a key role in leading the Paintings team in all matters relating to the care, conservation, access, research, cataloguing and exhibiting of the paintings, miniatures and frames in the collection.
Key Responsibilities:
- Leading a curatorial team, you’ll deliver the strategic plan for the Paintings section, provide coaching and guidance, as well as determining work schedules and assisting with budget management.
- You’ll work independently and in collaboration with others to curate exhibitions, working on all aspects from thematic conception through to representing Royal Collection Trust at press events.
- Sharing your passion for paintings with other academics and members of the public, you’ll deliver lectures, tours and other talks that aim to reach, inspire and engage with the broadest audience possible.
- With oversight of the display of paintings across all Royal residences, you’ll liaise with conservation colleagues and the art handling team to prepare items for exhibitions, loans and other activities.
- You’ll also have time to carry out research on the fascinating paintings in the Collection, publishing through various channels and responding to requests for information from colleagues and the public.
- Liaising with teams across Royal Collection Trust on exhibition proposals and display plans, you’ll bring people closer to a truly unique history and you’ll be inspired every day.
About you
- You’re a complete paintings enthusiast, with significant curatorial experience in a museum or gallery environment.
- You’re an experienced people manager, able to guide and encourage team members while allocating resources and monitoring progress.
- You’ll be used to preparing talks, presentations and displays, and you’ll be eager to share your knowledge with varied audiences.
- With an awareness of conservation issues and the challenges of working with historic interiors, you’ll be able to design effective hangs that show paintings to their very best.
- With previous project experience and strong administration skills, you’ll be able to plan and deliver long term projects alongside a daily workload and tight deadlines.
- A confident communicator, with excellent written and verbal communication skills, you’ll enjoy collaborating with team members and colleagues who are specialists in their own field.
- And driven by your passion for knowledge, you’re also confident working independently and delivering excellent results.
