Visual Arts and Exhibitions Intern at the Goethe-Institut New York

The Goethe-Institut New York is seeking an intern to join the Visual Arts and Exhibitions Program. The Goethe-Institut New York’s visual arts program has a particular focus on contemporary visual artists living and working in Germany, as well as the global contemporary art scene more broadly. The Institute hosts 3 to 4 exhibitions annually in our local space, in addition to other cultural programs. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and educational levels and with varying levels of German language skills. A very good command of English is required. The position reports to the Curator of Visual Arts and Programs. The duration of the internship is approximately 90 days beginning in February 2026.
Requirements
- EU citizenship
- Excellent command of English
- Good command of German preferred
- Current of completed university studies in a relevant field OR five years work experience in the field of arts and culture
- If graduated, degree must not have been completed more than 12 months prior to the start of the internship

As part of the visual arts program, the Goethe-Institut New York offers interns
- Opportunities to work on current and future exhibition programming
- Hands-on experience installing and de-installing exhibitions (depending on the time frame of the internship)
- Insight into the exhibition process from conception to execution
- Networking within the NYC art scene
- Credit as “Curatorial Assistant” for relevant exhibitions
They expect interns to have
- Experience in the visual arts (in any capacity)
- Knowledge of 20th and 21st century art history, especially current trends in global contemporary art
- Excellent organizational and communication skills (written and verbal)
- Excellent English language skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team while being self-motivated
- Willingness to remain in New York City for the entire duration of the internship
- Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings
- Curiosity and eagerness to learn and grow
