It is often said that the root word of “curator” is “cura”Latin for “care”. In the context of W.A.G.E.’s work, curators regularly operationalize that care by advocating for artists to be compensated — often going further by campaigning for W.A.G.E. Certification within their workplaces. Curators have a catalytic role to play in changing institutional culture, but what about independent curators who, due to their status as non-employees, lack the leverage to negotiate not only on behalf of artists but also on behalf of themselves?

As W.A.G.E. prepares to launch a contract generator for freelance art and cultural workers, join core organizer Lise Soskolne for a presentation on W.A.G.E. followed by a participatory discussion about the conditions of freelance curatorial labor both in and outside the United States.

Meet the Host

Lise Soskolne is an artist and core organizer of Working Artists and the Greater Economy (W.A.G.E.), a New York-based activist organization founded in 2008. W.A.G.E.’s mission is to establish sustainable economic relationships between artists and the institutions that contract their labor, and to introduce mechanisms for self-regulation into the art field that collectively bring about a more equitable distribution of its economy. Along with many others, Lise is a co-founder of W.A.G.E. and has been its core organizer since 2012.
