This is a rare opportunity to join Te Papa’s art curatorial team:.
You will work closely with others in the organisation to:
- provide curatorial leadership for contemporary art research, exhibitions, publications, collection development and programmes.
- maintain strong relationships with key contemporary art stakeholders in particular artists, curators, dealers, collectors and benefactors
- provide stewardship for the contemporary art collection as a key decision maker for the ongoing care, documentation and use of this collection
The Toi art team are currently consolidating their programme of research outputs including exhibitions, publications, and acquisitions to further build on their recent successes in the Toi Art galleries, and with Te Papa Press. The position holder will input into reshaping the future strategy for art at Te Papa, and will also become the curatorial lead on a major Time Based Media Art initiative that aims to conserve, research and future proof Te Papa’s approach to its TBMA collection.
The ideal person for this position will have:
- Relevant post graduate qualification (PhD or equivalent competency and experience)
- Minimum 8 years’ experience in a curatorial role preferably in a large collecting institution
- Deep understanding of curatorial practices and museum ethics
- Experience developing and managing a collection of national significance
- Experience curating high quality exhibitions of contemporary art with demonstrable experience managing large scale international projects
- Extensive experience working with artists to develop art commissions and exhibitions
- Well-developed network of artists, dealers, curators and other museum professionals within New Zealand and internationally
- Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills with experience speaking to the public and media
- Excellent written communication skills with the ability to write appropriately for different channels and a variety of target audiences
- Outstanding ability to facilitate and bring people together to work effectively
- Specific research experience and exhibition expertise with Time Based Media Art is highly desirable
