Role
The Programming Assistant will collaborate with the Xpace Director and Programming Coordinators to support the planning and execution of all Xpace programming in the 2023/24 exhibition year. The Programming Assistant will also perform tasks that support the daily operations of Xpace at large.
This position is a part-time 20-week contract, starting in October 2023 and ending in March 2024. Compensation is $18.54/hour (inclusive of 12% in lieu of vacation and benefits) for 10 hours a week, with the exact days to be determined upon hiring. This position will operate in a hybrid format, but the Programming Assistant is expected to be on-site at least one day per week.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director and Programming Coordinators, the Programming Assistant will:
- Manage outreach and scheduling of class visits and studio visits.
- Assist with the install/de-install of exhibitions under the guidance of the Programming Coordinators.
- Complete gallery errands such as picking up items for exhibitions and events with the direction of Programming Coordinators.
- Assist in preparations for events and openings.
- Attend and work at all openings and events (monitoring and greeting visitors, taking pictures, working behind the bar).
- Organize and reconfigure the Zine Library.
- Work on sourcing new materials for the Zine Library.
- Quality test current equipment, create a digital inventory, and prepare items for repair or disposal as needed.
- Coordinate the dissemination of Xpace’s annual anthology VOLUME and Xpace merchandise in collaboration with the Communications assistant.
- Manage the email programming@xpace.info and respond to inquiries and forward communications as needed to the appropriate staff member(s).
- Assist in cleaning and organizing gallery spaces, office, bathroom, and backroom.
- Assist with file management and digital archives (e.g., formatting exhibition essays, publishing workshop recordings, organizing image archives) in collaboration with the Archives Assistant.
Eligibility Requirements
This position is partially funded by the Institutional Work Study Plan. To be eligible, students must meet the following criteria:
- Canadian citizens, Permanent Residents, or Protected Persons
- Registered in full-time studies
- Ontario residents who have submitted an error-free OSAP application for 2023/24 (or out-of-province students receiving funding through their provincial student assistance program) or by completing the budget worksheet on the application
- Demonstrate financial need
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate:
- Is currently enrolled in a post-secondary design and/or art program at OCAD University and qualifies for the IWSP program.
- Is goal-oriented and able to work in a team.
- Has demonstrated strong time-management and communication skills.
- Possesses excellent administrative, communication, verbal, and organizational skills.
- Has knowledge and interest in contemporary visual art and design practices.
- Is comfortable working in a Mac environment.
- Is proficient in Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and Microsoft Office.
