Processing Foundation Fellowship Program: “Sustaining Community: Expansion & Access”
Open Call for 2024 Fellowships

The Processing Foundation welcomes applications for the 2024 Fellowship Program, themed “Sustaining Community: Expansion & Access.” The program supports innovative projects at the intersection of creative technology, art, and open-source software by artists, designers, activists, educators, engineers, researchers, coders, and collectives.
The fellowship offers a $10,000 stipend, mentorship, skill-building workshops, public programs, and community engagement opportunities. The program is entirely online, and applicants from all over the world are encouraged to apply. The 2024 cohort will include eight projects.
Projects should focus on the development of Processing software projects (such as Processing, p5.js, Processing.py, Processing for Android, ml5.js), or creative explorations for new iterations. Proposals from all backgrounds are welcome, especially those emphasizing innovation, learning, and the evolution of practice.
Fellowship Priority Areas for 2024
The 2024 fellowships will focus on:
- Archival Practices in Code & New Media
- Open-Source Governance
- Disability Justice in Creative Tech
- Access & AI
Eligibility: Open to both U.S.-based and international applicants. Groups should designate a lead applicant. Limited to one application per person.
Fellowship Timeline
Fellows must commit 200 hours between June 15 and October 31, 2024, coordinating schedules with mentors and attending bi-monthly meetings, workshops, and town halls. Key dates include the application period (April 1 – May 2, 2024), info sessions (April 5 and April 20), interviews (week of May 15), and fellowship start (June 15).
Mentorship and Community
Fellows receive guidance from mentors within the Processing Foundation community. Regular virtual meetings with mentors are mandatory. Fellows will join an introductory meeting, participate in group chats, attend alumni workshops, and contribute to town halls and presentations.
Project Documentation and Legacy
Fellows must provide regular updates and final documentation of their projects, ensuring open-source availability and considering future sustainability.
Stipend
The fellowship includes a $10,000 USD stipend, paid in four installments, with additional discretionary funds for project expenses. Full payment requires completion of fellowship requirements.
