Role Overview
The British Museum is seeking a Collection Manager specializing in framed works to oversee the preparation, care, and display of collection items. This role involves coordinating the work of Assistant Collection Managers, contributing to best practice standards, and supporting both exhibition and loan programs. The position offers a unique opportunity to engage with one of the world’s most significant art collections.
Key Responsibilities
- Collections Management:
- Lead the preparation of framed works for display and loans, including framing, installation, and packing.
- Oversee object handling, storage maintenance, and workshop operations.
- Document objects, including condition reporting and photography.
- Team Leadership:
- Manage up to four Assistant Collection Managers, ensuring effective resource allocation and task completion.
- Contribute to the cohesive operation of all collections management teams.
- Standards and Training:
- Support the development and implementation of best practices for object care, handling, and documentation.
- Contribute to the creation of a formalized training program for Museum staff.
- Security and Access:
- Oversee processes related to the security and audit of the collection.
- Facilitate access to collections for Museum staff and external audiences.
Qualifications and Skills
Required:
- GCSEs or equivalent education.
- Demonstrable interest in the British Museum’s collections.
- Manual dexterity and practical experience with object/art handling in a museum or similar setting.
- Proven ability to manage and motivate a team, oversee budgets, and coordinate a varied workload.
Preferred:
- Experience in maintaining workshops, permanent displays, and storerooms.
- Familiarity with loans, display logistics, and condition reporting.
