The “Research in Place” residencies invite researchers to explore the power dynamics and spatial justice within our cities at the We Made That studio in London. As part of the ‘Right to Place’ initiative, two residencies in 2025 offer dedicated time and space to advance independent work on themes including rights, spatial justice, placemaking, inclusivity, and urban regeneration. This unique opportunity is designed for early career researchers, academics, established practitioners, or research collectives eager to deepen their inquiry, exchange ideas, and contribute to critical conversations in a creative, collaborative studio environment.

Residency Duration & Benefits:

Duration: 3 months of free studio space
Facilities: Dedicated desk, storage, meeting space, WiFi, printing, tea and coffee
Support: Mentorship and dialogue sessions with our multidisciplinary team
Exposure: Opportunities to expand your network and engage in public speaking, team workshops, and roundtable events

Who Can Apply:

Early career researchers, academics, established practitioners, or research collectives
Research proposals must focus on themes of rights, spatial justice, and place-based research
Must reside in or be able to travel to London during the residency
The residency is self-funded; applicants must provide their own IT equipment, software, and materials
Applicants must have the right to live and work in the UK
Active participation in co-learning (e.g., writing a research piece, leading a “show and tell” session, or engaging in roundtables) is expected

Application Process & Timeline:

Applications Open: 05 February 2025
Open Afternoon: 13 February 2025, 2pm–4pm at We Made That, Unit 21 Tower Workshops, 58 Riley Road, London SE1 3DG (an opportunity to ask questions, meet the team, and tour the studio)
Application Deadline: 02 March 2025
Selection & Interviews: 10 March 2025 – 21 March 2025
Residency Start: April 2025 (exact dates to be mutually agreed)
