The British Museum is seeking a Senior Collection Manager: Loans and Display to oversee the Loans & Display, Framed Works, and Textiles teams, providing leadership and support across the Collection Care and Moves department.
The postholder will lead the planning and coordination of collection management operations, ensuring the efficient scheduling and delivery of the Museum’s programme of loans and exhibitions both in Bloomsbury and internationally. This role involves significant responsibility for assessing resources and planning the technical delivery of an ambitious exhibition and loans programme.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead resource planning and allocate team workloads for the Museum’s loans and exhibition projects.
- Develop and implement collection management procedures that align with best practice standards.
- Manage and mentor Collection Managers, supporting team development and performance.
- Maintain and report on a comprehensive programme of projects and activities.
- Oversee health and safety compliance and ensure facilities and equipment are properly maintained.
- Support the Museum’s Known Consignor status and annual auditing processes.
Candidate Profile
- Degree or equivalent practical experience.
- Proven interest in the British Museum’s collections.
- Strong knowledge of collection care, object handling, display, and preventive conservation.
- Demonstrated leadership and team management skills.
- Competence in managing timetables, budgets, and resources.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and influencing abilities.
